Introduction to State Courts
This class is taught by attorneys Alexis Garmey Chardon and Kristine Hanly at Garmey Law in Portland. Chardon represents injured plaintiffs in personal injury, civil rights, medical malpractice, employment, and products liability cases. As a criminal defense attorney, Hanly has had successes in suppression hearings, secured acquittals in bench and jury trials, and argued to Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

This lesson is taught by Sawyer Loftus, an investigative reporter at the Bangor Daily News. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Loftus grew up in Vermont where he worked for Vermont Public Radio, The Burlington Free Press and VTDigger. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Vermont Cynic, UVM’s independent student newspaper. He was named Maine’s top young writer in 2022 by the Maine Press Association.
